Travel - Chiang Mai: Opinionated Guide to Craft Beer in Chiang Mai

Date: 2026mar7 Country: Thailand Q. Chiang Mai: Opinionated Guide to Craft Beer in Chiang Mai A. The Craft Boss You might call Chiang Mai Brewery the major craft maker in town. From my sampling, everything from Chiang Mai Brewery is above average! You can get its products at many restaurants, bars, supermarkets, convenience stores. https://beerchiangmai.com Beers (in preference order): Summer Sky Orange IPA: amazing Winter Night Cacao Stout: very good Blossom Weizen: good if you like wheat beers Ping River Pilsner: good Red Truck Red Ale: the most common craft beer in town. Totally fine General Payment Notes Like most of Thailand, international credit card acceptance is low or there is fee. QR code payment is more common but that currently isn't practical for visitors. So that leaves cash - and you might need a bunch because craft beer costs at least twice as much as domestic. Places roughly in order by my preference... Nai-Kad Type: bar Area: East side of old city Payment: cash, QR I loved the aesthetic. Its super minimal inside Mingmueag Market. But the look and feel probably isn't for everyone. There is a tall cement lip you can easily trip over when entering/exiting. There are plastic chairs and tables. The are hooked into the community. And have a good rotating selection of craft taps. And one Chang - maybe for market diners who aren't crafty. Sucking Stones Type: brewpub Area: Nimman Payment: credit card (no fee), cash, QR This place is great. Indoor and outdoor seating. About half the taps are their own and the others are guests. They take credit cards (with a fee) and you get a 10% discount on your birthday. Backin Brewery Type: brewpub Area: Jet Yod Payment: cash I discovered Backin beer at Nai-Kad - and immediately decided I had to visit. The pub and all their beers are based on The Hobbit (book). It works dvery well for the beers and the location is enchanting. Its slightly out of the way for most people but worth the ride share ride. There were mosquitoes so wear long sleeves or bring big spray. 053 Craft Beer Type: bar Area: Nimman (part of Think Park) Payment: credit card, QR (not sure), cash This bar has some really harsh reviews on Google Maps and elsewhere but I liked it. They have about 6 rotating taps plus bottles/canned beers in the fridge. Every time I went a significant number of taps were out of service. Most taps are craft but there's also Heineken. The staff are somewhat friendly but not particularly knowledgeable. The outdoor seating a great place to people-watch on a warm evening. Chit Hole Type: bar (selling own product) Payment: (not sure) Area: Nimman (part of One Nimman) This place didn't click for me. The staff were unfriendly (rare for Thailand). They sell their own beer - some of the favor choices seemed wrong to me. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Its small (not a criticism). House of Markie Type: microbrewery that has a tasting room. Area: near Airport? (not sure) Sadly I never made it there. They had a taps at a festival at One Nimman - everything I tried was great. A business card says "The tasting room: Open Thursdays, 5pm - 10pm" The Globe Bar Type: bar/restaurant Area: East side of old city This place is a routine bar/restaurant with a pool tables in an area with other similar places. For craft beer, they only had 3 bottles from Chiang Mai Brewery when I visited. Chiang Mai German Microbrewery Type: brewpub Area: train station I never made it here My Beer Friend Out of business Complimentary article https://beerinthecity.com/chiangmai
